Nova União's Horlando Monteiro is ready to play yet another IBJJF tournament. This Saturday, in Miami, Florida, the black belt fights for gold at the Miami Open, in the division of heavyweights, its new category, for a few months.
Horlando, who comes from victory in the absolute at the Atlanta Open, explained the category change and plans for the 2018 season.
"I just want to hit light heavyweight right now at the next European IBJJF in 2018. I'm doing a work of gaining strength and cutting the weight would disrupt the spreadsheet I've been following a bit. I am well trained and I hope to put my positions into practice and always be one step ahead of my opponent, "says Horlando, before talking about his training.
"I've been training a lot of fall and guard pass. These are things I've been training for a long time, but I do not use much in competition. But gradually, I am comfortable in any situation and against anyone. "
Horlando also took the opportunity to detail the importance of practicing physical activity for his Jiu-Jitsu and his life. Then read the opinion of the regular Jiu-Jitsu competitor.
"I do the physical part from the age of 16, intercalating between bodybuilding, Olympic and functional lifting. This helps me a lot to avoid injuries, because it leaves my ligaments and muscles stronger and also leaves me with more muscular resistance, being able to make force for more time during the fight. Nowadays, in the black belt, all the guys I've fought are very strong and everyone has a lot of technique too. I believe that those who are better conditioned have a better chance of winning the fight. "
Another notable aspect of Horlando Monteiro is his mental part, which shows to be very strong during Jiu-Jitsu competitions. His mentor, Gustavo Dantas, is responsible for this whole process of mental maturation.
"I've been working with Gustavo since he was 4 and he has been improving my Jiu-Jitsu and all areas of my life. He has lived many things that I am experiencing and he always shares his experiences with me. He has always comes with positive things and makes me believe every day more in the work we do together, "he says.
