Born in Venice in 1832, Felice Beato is believed to have met a fellow photographer, Briton James Robertson, in Malta in 1850. The pair travelled together to Constantinople (now Istanbul) a year later and later formed a professional partnership.

Beato visited Greece and Jerusalem before reporting on the Crimean War. In 1858 he visited India, in 1860 he went to Egypt, and he then covered the Second Opium War in China.
